One of the lunches our family really likes, especially as the weather gets cooler, is the hot dago. It is easy to make and, since you can do a lot of the work ahead of time, it is nice when we are busy.
2 lbs ground beef
2 lbs ground Italian pork sausage
3 eggs
1/3 cup crushed crackers or bread crumbs
1 tsp black pepper
2 tsp salt
2 tsp creole seasoning (or 1 tsp ground red pepper)
1/4 cup parmesan cheese
Mix all ingredients above. Form into thin oblong patties and brown in pan. Add patties and two large cans of spaghetti sauce to crock pot. Cook on medium 1-1/2 to 2 hours (or you may palce all in baking dish and heat in oven).
Crusty bread, garlic bread loaf, large rolls or the like
softened butter
garlic powder
mozzarella cheese, shredded
Cut bread into a top and bottom halves. Slice into pieces 2" larger than the patties. Butter these slices, sprinkle with garlic powder. Broil until slightly browned.
Place one patty on each bread, spoon some sauce over patty, sprinkle shredded mozzerella cheese over the works and broil until cheese is melted. Serve with extra sauce.
**side note** Three years ago the Human Rights office for the city of St Paul tried to prevent restaurants from serving the Hot Dago, claiming the meals are discriminatory and derogatory. An Attorney, with Italian heritage, took up the restaurants cause saying that the term describes the food and it's ingredients rather than any individual. The results? Eateries in St Paul are free to serve the Hot Dago, at least for now.
