Does the cold wind blow?
Time to check the Woolly Bear Caterpillar to see what the weather will like this winter. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the longer the middle brown band, the milder and shorter the coming winter; the shorter the brown band, the longer and more severe winter will be. The one we found has a really long band reaching almost to the end of his tail, hope he is right! If you find a caterpillar and want to know what kind they are and what kind of moth they turn into, check out this cool caterpillar page at Discover Life. Just plug in the distinguishing characteristics of your caterpillar and it will tell you what kind it is or give you a couple of choices. Very handy.
