Is spelling really an important skill?

I got this in an email today.  Both of my kids could read it quickly without stumbling over any words so now I wonder why I stress so much about spelling.  They are already use to me torturing them with spelling all these years so really, why quit now?  They can learn to spell correctly for the 45 people out of a 100 who can't read it - yeah, that's a good, sound, logical reason I am sure they will buy into! lol

Only great minds can read this

This is weird, but interesting!

If you can raed this, you have a sgtrane mnid too

Can you raed this? Olny 55 plepoe out of 100 can.

I cdnuolt blveiee that I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd what I was rdanieg.. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno't mtaetr in what oerdr the ltteres in a word are, the olny iproamtnt tihng is that the frsit and last ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can still raed it whotuit a pboerlm. This is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the word as a wlohe. Azanmig huh? Yaeh and I awlyas tghuhot slpeling was ipmorantt!

I am a terrible speller and I have made it this long.

Oh spell checker how I love thee!

One wonders though if you must first know how a word should look in order to then read this "correctly"
