You have to be patient to homeschool

While I was waiting for the kids to get done with their Awana classes tonight I was talking to another mom and she asked if the kids went to school in that town.  No, they don't, I told her, and for some stupid reason I added that we homeschool.  As soon as the words were out of my mouth I thought, what are you saying, you know this never turns out well.

Right away she says, "I could never homeschool, I wouldn't have the patience for it."  When in the world did homeschool parents corner the market on patience?  Today was one of those school days where I could have used a little, okay a lot, more patience and so it wasn't the best time for someone to say that to me.  But I smiled nicely and said, "Some days I don't either."  Dad was with and he smiled nicely and said that today was one of "those days."

I hope I didn't burst her bubble about homeschool parents.

I think that is my biggest pet peeve when it comes to answering someone about homeschooling questions.

They make that statement right there and it just lights a fuse in my brain.

You did awesome and thankfully your husband was there to back you up.

If I could only HS when I was patient, not much schooling would happen around here! Haha. I think one of the reasons God called me to HS was so that He could help me in that area. Isn't that the way it works so often? =)

Glad you're along for the month-long challenge. I'm impressed that you're doing daily posts. Good for you!! I am having a fun afternoon, visiting lots of blogs and reading lots of lists.

People say that about knitting, reading long books, quilting, running, and other things that are actually engrossing and addicting too. (Not that I actually run, tag is about as athletic as I get)

I think I'll borrow your answer next time I get that comment!

Brilliant response. I am often faced with this comment, either in regards to homeschooling or having five kids. Neither choice resulting in a package of patience arriving on my doorstep.

Great response. When I get that comment, I like to turn it right around with "Of COURSE you could homeschool your children. You know them better than anyone else, right?" If I can put the conversation on them and not me, I'm much more comfortable! Plus, I can think of at least 3 people who started a conversation with the whole "I could never homeschool..." who eventually ended up homeschooling. It's such a blessing to remind them of that conversation from years ago!

Merry Christmas,
Nancy
